Introduction
Develop New Senses: Become Trans-Sensual: Make Sense Otherwise
The overwhelming majority of the cosmos does not “shine” at all—hence the statement that the universe is “mostly dark.”
Human senses were designed only for us to survive on earth, not to understand anything.
If we want to survive beyond the earth or on earth, we now need new and augmented senses. I am working with Thom Kubli, Diana Carolina, and others in the Amazon Basin on developing “augmented sonic thinking” using access to all waves, not just the sound waves humans hear.
Neutrino observatories and gravitational wave observatories are being used to create art by artists such as Liliane Lijn [2], but we have a way to go. The Astroparticle and Cosmology (APC) laboratory [3] in Paris gathers researchers (experimentalists, theorists, and artists) working in different areas including high-energy astrophysics, cosmology, gravitation, and neutrino physics.
Artists can be the pioneers that help us understand the whole universe, not just that accessible to vision or some of our other senses. The neurosciences are now on the front line of STEM—especially since humans are now being essentially hybridized with artificial intelligences. Making sense does require senses, but also rhizomatic integration of meaning.
